How to prevent pigment spots from the sun

In summer you spend more time outdoors and your skin gets more sun. This increases the risk of pigment spots, especially if your skin is prone to them. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do yourself to prevent them. These are our four tips.

1. Use a cream with the right active ingredients

You can do the most at home. We recommend a good cream with active ingredients such as vitamin C, glycolic acid or retinol. At the practice we have several products for this, such as the Vitamin C serum and the Midnight Reboot serum from Alpha-H, the Biolumin-C gel cream from Dermalogica and the Rosehip oil from More Natural.

Try to avoid products containing perfume, alcohol, parabens and sulphates.

2. Use a good SPF every day

The sun plays a major role in the development of pigment spots. At the same time, you need the sun for vitamin D. About 20 minutes in the sun without protection is enough for that. After that, it is important to apply sunscreen.

We recommend a day cream with preferably SPF 50. Which one suits you best depends on your skin type. The Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF50+ from Alpha-H, for example, is a good cream for every day. On sunny days it is best to reapply your SPF every two hours.

3. Have your skin treated regularly

A healthy skin barrier helps prevent skin problems such as pigment spots. With a regular treatment at the practice, such as a chemical peel or a SkinPen treatment, you keep your skin in good condition and reduce the risk of pigment spots.

4. Eat food rich in antioxidants

You can also help your skin from within. Antioxidants protect the skin against the harmful effects of UV radiation. They also contribute to the production of collagen and elastin, a better moisture balance and a stronger skin barrier, and they help keep the pigment cells in balance. You mainly find them in vegetables and fruit. The more colour on your plate, the better.

Do you already have pigment spots?

If spots have developed that do not disappear on their own, we can reduce them at the practice. For example with a chemical peel, laser therapy, SkinPen microneedling, cryotherapy or the ME-Line course. Book a free intake to discuss what suits your skin.
