About the treatment

Aftercare for breast cancer

The consequences of breast cancer are often far-reaching. A great deal changes, both emotionally and physically. Fluid retention, a tight or adhered scar and skin problems are complaints that can remain after treatment. With mammacare, our skin and oedema therapists help you resolve these complaints or reduce them as much as possible.

The practice works with various doctors and specialists in the area, such as Ziekenhuis Amstelland, the AMC, the VU, the AVL (Netherlands Cancer Institute) and the Cancer Care Center. In addition to oedema therapy, our therapists also specialise in scar therapy.

What is oedema?

Oedema is an abnormal build-up of fluid, caused by a disturbed balance between the supply and drainage of fluid. It shows as tense or swollen skin, a heavy feeling and an increase in the size of the body part. It can develop after damage to the lymphatic vessels.

The treatment

During the treatment we use various techniques to improve the drainage of lymph fluid, including Deep Oscillation Therapy (DOT) and manual lymphatic drainage. A compression bandage, lymph tape and compression stockings are often part of the treatment process.

Enough exercise contributes to a good outcome; you are given exercises to do on your own. Lymphoedema is a chronic condition. Those who keep up their treatment consistently maintain the result achieved.

Who is it for

Why oedema therapy?

  • The skin becomes less tight and sensitive
  • Scars become less visible and painful
  • The size of the oedema decreases
  • Tiredness and restricted movement decrease
