Adult acne: causes, treatment and skin therapy

Acne is often seen as a problem that mainly affects teenagers. Yet many adults, particularly women between the ages of 25 and 45, suffer from spots, blackheads or inflammation under the skin. We call this adult acne. It can be just as bothersome and persistent as acne in puberty, especially if it keeps coming back or leaves scars and pigment spots.
In this article you can read what adult acne is, how it develops and what you can do about it.
What is adult acne?
Acne in adults often differs from teenage acne. It occurs less on the forehead or nose, and more on the jawline, cheeks, chin and neck. The skin reactions are often deeper, more inflamed and can feel painful. With adult acne we also regularly see a combination of spots, redness, pigment spots and early scarring.
Adult acne occurs in both men and women, but women are more prone to it because of hormonal fluctuations and sensitivity to stress.
Possible causes of adult acne
The causes of acne in adults are complex and can differ from person to person. Common triggers are:
- Hormonal fluctuations: for example due to menstruation, pregnancy, contraception or the menopause.
- Stress: increases the production of cortisol, which stimulates sebum production.
- Incorrect skincare: products that are too harsh or the use of comedogenic ingredients.
- Diet: dairy, sugars and processed food can affect acne in some people.
- Environmental factors: such as air pollution or working in an environment with a lot of dust or grease.
- Genetic predisposition: some people are simply more prone to acne.
Why treating it yourself often does not work
Many adults try to solve acne themselves with products from the chemist or advice from the internet. Unfortunately, this often has the opposite effect. Products that are too harsh can damage the skin barrier, which actually makes inflammation worse. It is also common for people to use the wrong products for their skin type, or to seek professional help too late.
If you notice that your skin is not improving or is even getting worse, it is wise to see a skin therapist.
How do we treat acne at Huidzorg Amstelland?
As registered skin therapists, we specialise in examining and treating acne. During an intake we map out your skin condition, lifestyle and triggers. Based on this, we draw up a treatment plan aimed at:
- Reducing inflammation
- Preventing new spots
- Improving the skin texture and preventing scars
- Calming the skin and restoring the skin barrier
Common treatments for adult acne
Professional deep cleansing (acne therapy)
Cleansing the skin, removing impurities and calming active acne. Often as a course for a lasting result.
Medical peels
Peels with salicylic acid, lactic acid or glycolic acid can improve sebum regulation, reduce inflammation and stimulate cell renewal.
Microneedling (SkinPen)
Makes acne scars less visible and improves the skin texture.
LED light therapy
Reduces inflammation and redness and counteracts bacteria in the skin.
Tailored product advice
We work with product lines such as Alpha-H and Dermalogica, which restore the skin barrier and help keep the skin clear.
Is acne treatment covered by insurance?
In many cases, yes. If you have acne on your face, you may qualify for cover under your supplementary health insurance. Our skin therapists are listed in the Kwaliteitsregister Paramedici (Dutch Quality Register for Paramedics), and we have contracts with the major Dutch health insurers. If in doubt, we are happy to help you check what is covered.
You do not always need a referral letter, but in some situations it can be useful for your claim with the insurer.
When should you see a skin therapist?
Do not wait too long to see a specialist if you:
- Regularly have inflammation or spots on your face
- Are left with scars or pigment spots after breakouts
- Notice that self-care gives no or insufficient results
- Want to know what your skin needs
A course of treatment prevents the acne from getting worse and limits permanent damage to the skin. You also receive good advice for home care.
